Mission to Engineer (ME)

Connecting people in need of assistive technology to those who can help.

ME is our newest approach to connect FIRST Robotics teams with physically disabled people all around the country, allowing for hands-on learning experiences and cost-effective assistive technology.

Description

Team 135 has had a long history of building assistive technology, from our Hand of Grace project to our current Innovations for Isaiah project. Our first assistive technology creation was a prosthetic arm designed to help a young girl, Grace Hildreth, gain more mobility and independence. A year later, we were approached by a young boy named Braylen. Braylen was diagnosed with Joubert’s Syndrome, a disease leading to the underdevelopment of the cerebellar vermis and a malformed brain stem, as a young kid. To allow Braylen to communicate with his peers, Team 135 built him a rolling device holder that he could take anywhere. Later, we began our work with Ella, a girl inflicted with SMA type 1. We have done several projects with her, such as switch adapting toys and creating a food overflow notifier. Our most recent project is with Isaiah, who has arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. With him, we are working on a Sock Aid and a more accessible scooter board for gym class.

On a national level, we are connecting robotics teams to kids just like these that would benefit from our ability to provide free, customized assistive technology.
