FLL 920, Storm Surge

From Oviedo, Florida, United States of America

We are from Jackson Heights Middle School in Oveido, Florida. We have a total of 10 team members. This is the first time this team has been together, but many team members have previous FLL experience

Our middle school, Jackson Heights, started their robotics program in 2013. Our coach's enthusiasm led to our middle school having not one, but 2 FLL teams. Slowly, more students are becoming involved in FLL, and now each year, more than 100 students try out. Also, the expertise of the students on the team has gotten better, and now we are advancing to Regionals, State and even the North American Invitational in California. Team 920 has a mixture of many grades, from 6th to 8th grade. We are known as Storm Surge. This year, we won a regionals bid at the Qualifying Tournament known as the Bear Lake Bash. Then at regionals, we received a second place Champions Award, with a state bid and an invitation to the North American Invitational. We have taught elementary students at our schools STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) night how to control an EV3 robot. We also shared our project with hundreds of incoming 6th graders and their parents at curriculum night. Most of them didn't even know that grease can go down the drain! We are very excited to meet new teams at the different places we travel. We wish all teams good luck, and remember to always Shock the Crowd!
